After a successful first season collaborating with our Artistic Associates, we are excited to continue collaborating with some of Toronto’s finest student composers! Find out more about Lieke van der Voort, our newest Artistic Associate, below.
Lieke van der Voort is an avant-garde vocalist, performer and composer, born in The Netherlands in 1983. She moved to Toronto in 2009 to attend the Humber College music program. She has studied with Christine Duncan, Geoff Young, David Occhipinti, Carlos Lopes and Shannon Gunn. Lieke writes complex pieces with emphasis on rhythm and unusual vocal textures; always leaving room for improvisation. Her lyrics are loaded with opinion on politics and worldly events. Lieke uses her voice in a wide dynamic range and is in constant search for non-conventional ways to use the voice within an ensemble. She ensures that emotions felt are projected through her voice. At present, Lieke is involved in “New Lineage”, a collective of improvising vocalists actively engaged in Toronto’s music scene. The idea behind New Lineage is to restore the human element in urban architectural, blurring the lines between performer and audience, with focus on voice and movement of the body through space. During Song Dong’s Communal Courtyard exhibition at the AGO June 2016, the collective will perform every Friday evening in the Walker Court. The pieces will be improvised and based on the themes brought forth by the exhibition. The collective can be compared to Christine Duncan’s Element choir, only of smaller scale and with set members.
It is thanks to fellow Artistic Associates Ben McCarroll-Butler and Mason Victoria that we discovered Lieke, as all three of them are classmates at Humber College! It’s Lieke’s adventurous spirit and compositional style that we felt resonated with our message here at Spectrum Music. “Using both improvisation and written elements is what I think makes composition interesting for both players and composers”, she said. “It creates a setting in which we can truly be in the now, but within the walls of a context, allowing us to freely explore whatever this context is.”
We are so thrilled to be working with Lieke this season, so on behalf of the rest of us here at Spectrum Music: welcome to the team!
