If Spectrum’s May 29th season finale, “Your Wish is Our Concert”, could be summed up in one word, that word would be choice.
Over the past several months, we have taken your ideas for topics to explore in our compositions. You submitted these ideas at our concerts, through emails, or through social media. We received many amazing ideas, including narratives from the “missed connections” section of Craigslist, the many facets of fear, and even a narrative about Keith Richards’ footwear.
Then, you got to choose which of those ideas you thought were the most thought provoking, and made your opinions heard through our online voting campaign. Through the strong response we received, we as composers took the most successful ideas and ran with them.
I went with the concept of fear, and have anchored my composition around a very compelling poem by Robert Francis titled “Paper Men to Air Hopes and Fears”.
Finally, the featured ensemble truly embodies the concept of choice. Never before in Spectrum’s existence have we presented a concert with so many instrument choices from such a small number of musicians. The highly acclaimed TorQ percussion ensemble members Jamie Drake and Daniel Morphy, who will be heard on a multitude of awesome and quirky instruments, will anchor the ensemble. The group also features long-time Spectrum collaborator and awe-inspiring multi-instrumentalist Peter Lutek, who will be covering a massive sonic range on a collection of unusual clarinets. Last but not least, soprano Erin Cooper-Gay, who is equally well known for her beautiful voice as she is for her French horn playing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, will front the quartet.
Don’t miss what is sure to be an exciting conclusion to Spectrum’s 2014/15 concert season! Your Wish is Our Concert takes place on Friday, May 29th at the Alliance Francaise Theatre (24 Spadina Rd) at 8pm, with a pre-concert chat at 7:30.Buy Tickets
